CRESPO’S 200TH EUROPEAN GOAL

MILAN – Hernan Crespo’s goal in the 2-0 home win against Parma was his 200th at club level in Europe. The Argentine striker’s slotted effort against the Gialloblu ended up in the same net (under the Curva Nord) he scored his first European goal in, in Inter 3-1 Parma on 27 October 1996.

CRESPO: “AN EXAGGERATED INTER…”

MILAN – Hernan Crespo scored against his former side to add to Maxwell’s magnificent solo effort and give Inter a 2-0 victory over Parma. “We’re closer and closer to the Scudetto? Only the mathematical certainty is missing now, but we must continue on this path and continue to do well,” the Argentine striker told Sky Italia.

“Maxwell’s goal? Max deserves this wonderful goal and also a lot more. He’s an extraordinary lad. He had a very serious injury, he has worked hard, and has waited for his moment after recovering. Once this happened he started doing wonderful things. We’re very happy for him.

“Great statistics for this Inter? It’s almost like we’re exaggerating. But Inter are an exaggerated team… I’m very happy about my 200th goal since I started playing in Europe, but I’m a little bit disappointed because it’s my first against Parma, the team I started at when I came here from Argentina. Let’s hope they stay up. I will try to score next Saturday in Reggio Calabria to stop Reggina and help them.”

MILAN – Maxwell and Hernan Crespo scored to lead Inter to victory over Parma and put Inter twenty points clear of Roma with nine games of the Serie A season remaining.

The Brazilian full-back opened his scoring account with a sublime solo goal on 56 minutes. Crespo slotted home against his former club fourteen minutes later to hand Roberto Mancini his 100th victory as Inter coach.

There were fews signs of post-international break ring rustiness as the Nerazzurri took full advantage of Roma’s home stalemate with AC Milan and claim their 25th win from 29 league games.

Cambiasso, back in the team for the first time since sustaining an injury in the 2-2 Champions League draw with Valencia, almost got the afternoon off to a perfect start but stabbed wide after a Stankovic cross.

Francesco Toldo, between the posts in place of Julio Cesar, kept out efforts from Rossi, Gasbarroni as relegation-threatened Parma created plenty of early opportunities.

Inter stepped up a gear in the fifteen-minute period before the interval. Marco Materazzi had an overhead kick tipped over by Bucci then Crespo crashed a close-range volley just over.

Maxwell delighted the Meazza with a memorable opening goal after the restart. The Brazilian wing-back won the ball on the touchline, one-twoed with Crespo, slalomed past three Parma defenders and crashed his shot into the roof of the net.

Rossi fired a low shot narrowly wide as a spirited Parma side fought hard for a leveller. But Hernan Crespo increased Inter’s lead on 70 minutes, sidefooting into an open net after receiving square from Adriano.

The Gialloblu’s continued efforts were thwarted by Francesco Toldo, who pulled off a reflex save from Parma’s man of the match Gasbarroni .

Inter went close to a deserved third when Adriano’s header from Recoba’s pinpoint curling cross hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced back off the line.

Gasbarroni then had a flicked effort cleared off the line by Maicon after his initial shot was parried by Toldo, who minutes later made a crucial block from ex-Inter playmaker Domenico Morfeo.

Adriano could have made extra sure of the points late on but fired over after collecting a crossfield pass from Mariano Gonzalez.

Both goalkeepers were called into action in time added on, Recoba forcing Bucci into a diving save before Rossi tested Toldo with a diagonal shot.

ASCOLI – Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a second-half brace as the Nerazzurri took a step closer to the Serie A title at the Stadio Del Duca.

Inter substitute Adriano set up the Swedish forward for his 14th and 15th goals of the season after a scrappy opening forty-five minutes.

Ascoli reduced the arrears in overtime when Bonanni converted penalty awarded for a Samuel foul on Bjelanovic.

The 2-1 victory sees runaway league leaders Inter move eighteen points clear of nearest rivals Roma, who were held to a goalless draw at Fiorentina.

Julio Cesar made first-half saves from Nastase and Fini, with Brazilian full-backs Maxwell and Maicon missing from inviting positions before Bjelanovic and Boudianski went close for the Bianconeri.

Ibra, whose spectacular lob shot on 22 minutes would have been a candidate for goal of the season had it gone in, handed Inter the lead twenty minutes after the interval.

The Swedish forward volleyed home Adriano’s inswinging cross from the right after the Brazilian was beautifully picked out by Dejan Stankovic.

Ibrahimovic added his and Inter’s second eight minutes later, slotting under Eleftheropoulos after collecting an Adriano through pass.

Sonetti’s side grabbed a late consolation when Bonanni sent Julio Cesar the wrong way from the penalty spot.

CRESPO: “CRUZ DESERVED A GREAT GAME”

MILAN – “You always celebrate derby victories. We have won both of them and it’s enormously satisfying for us,” stated a jubilant Hernan Crespo after Inter’s 2-1 win over AC Milan. “It has been a very hard week for us, so this derby win has come at the right time. The team showed great character and deserved to win.

“In the dressing room before the game we said it will be a special championship for the Nerazzurri fans because we have won both derbies and because Juventus are in Serie B.

“Can we start celebrating the Scudetto? Let’s wait until the mathematics proves us right, but we’re close to the finishing post and today we’re only celebrating the derby victory.

Asked if he was disappointed about his substitution, the Argentine replied: “You’re obviously never pleased when you’re substituted, but I’m very happy because Cruz deserved to play a great game and he won us this derby.”

MANCINI: “A GREAT PERFORMANCE”
MILAN – “I’m happy but I think that’s quite normal after this victory,” declared a satisfied Roberto Mancini after Inter’s 2-1 win over AC Milan. “If we continue at this tempo the season will be extraordinary and the boys deserve it. The only thing I’m sorry about is not getting through against Valencia in the Champions League. I don’t think we deserved to get knocked out over the two legs. The team played a great match today. We might not have finished off our chances in the first half, but we did really well after the restart.”

Asked to comment on Inter’s Champions League exit, Mancini replied: “Like I said in yesterday’s press conference, the cup is a really fascinating competition. But if you’re not perfect you can risk getting knocked out due to a few negative episodes. I don’t think they deserved the 2-2 draw in the first leg in Milan because they didn’t do that much to get two goals. But we’re out of it now and it’s useless to carry on talking about it. Let’s hope we can celebrate Inter’s centenary by winning the Champions League next season.”

Mancini moved Burdisso into midfield after replacing the injured Dacourt with Samuel for the second half of Sunday’s derby. ” Burdisso played very well in midfield against Valencia,” the Inter coach said. “I kept him in that position and asked others like Stankovic and Maxwell to push a lot. I think that Cruz’ goal just after coming on came by chance, although he clearly did very well to be in the right place at the right time.

“We now have to continue what has been an extraordinary and unique year. We have to try to do our best. Like I have just said, we’re disappointed about going out of the Champions League because we could have looked after our lead in the championship. But now we have to give our best in the remaining league games and the two Tim Cup final matches. By doing this, what we’re doing will be a wonderful memory in twenty years time.”

UCL: INTER KNOCKED OUT ON AWAY GOALS

Tuesday, 06 March 2007 22:44:47] VALENCIA – Inter are out of the Champions League after a goalless draw at the Estadio Mestalla.

Valencia’s two away goals from the first leg in Milan proved enough to see the Spanish side through to the quarter-final stage.

Marco Materazzi headed over a Stankovic inswinger early on, with Julio Cesar parrying Baraja’s diagonal drive before Morientes fired over from an inviting position just outside the area.

Angulo then had a shot on the turn blocked by Burdisso as Valencia pushed for an opener with Baraja rifling over from 25 yards.

The end-to-end first half continued with Argentina captain Ayala getting back well to dispossess Crespo who had just Canizares to beat after meeting a Stankovic through pass.

The Nerazzurri had a penalty claim turned down ten minutes before the break when Albiol appeared to handle the ball when blocking Crespo’s shot from Stankovic’s short pass in the six-yard box.

Inter survived a couple of scares just after the restart when Villa’s near-range header deflected off Dacourt before Julio Cesar produced a point-blank save from Moretti’s bullet header.

Stankovic fired into the side-netting from a Maicon cross, with Crespo volleying over from the Brazilian’s looping pass as Mancini’s men carved out a string of second-half chances.

Materazzi went closest on 75 minutes, rising at the back post to head on target a Figo outswinger that was miraculously saved on the line by Marchena before Canizares smothered. Julio Cruz had an effort blocked by Albiol minutes later after timing his run perfectly to meet a Materazzi pass.

Valencia hit back on the counter-attack, going close through Joaquin who fired wide from 20 yards, and Vicente, who tested Julio Cesar late on with a fierce low strike, forcing Materazzi into a sweeping clearance after the Inter keeper’s block.

Fabio Grosso was twice denied in the Spanish box before Valencia lauched an all-out assault on the Inter goal in a tense finale, with Burdisso making two vital clearances from Villa before Marchena fired narrowly wide from 20 yards.

The match was marred by an ugly incident after the final whistle. Burdisso was punched in the face by Valencia substitute Navarro, sparking a brawl between players from both sides.
